Transform Higher Education and Establish University-Industry Linkages, say Pranab Mukherjee

Former President Pranab Mukherjee while delivering his address after inaugurating a 3-day international conference at the O P Jindal Global University, here, emphasised on the need for better “quality of instruction, faculty, research and capacity building for Indian universities. Speaking at the inauguration of an international conference on ‘Universities of the Future,’ Mukherjee added, “Knowledge mobilisation through quality higher education is pivotal to the socio-economic development of a nation. Innovation and futuristic universities are the driving force behind this.”

Bemoaning the fact that Indian universities have failed to make it to the lists of top 200 universities in the world, Mukherjee spoke of transforming our varsities into centres of excellence is the key challenge policy-maker and academic leaders face. An important necessity of modern Universities is to have a chain of inspired teachers who can ignite the minds of students and encourage them to think out-of-the box, and for solving the societal problems through their ingenuity, Mukherjee said. Educational institutions have to gear up to face the socio-economic challenge the country is facing in terms of job creation, Mukherjee said

Linkages: Education, Industry and Market

“Quality, affordability and accessibility are the three cornerstones of higher education which need to be understood in the Indian context,” he said while advocating linkages with the best universities in the world to ensure student mobility, research and joint projects. Mukherjee also emphasised that the education system should take on the challenge of tapping the ‘demographic dividend’ while also pitching for a stronger industry-academia partnership. “We will also have to provide a competent skilled workforce,” he said. The President said that it was essential to establish linkages between innovation and the market. Strong linkages ought to be established with all the stakeholders in society, and that an interface between education and industry must be supported by all Future Universities of our country, he added.

Super 30 founder Anand Kumar urges the Indian-Canadian Community to contribute to India’s progress

Organised by 20 big Indian groups in association with the Indian embassy in Canada, ‘Namaste Canada’ featured a call to the diaspora for making contributions to India’s development and progress. ‘Super 30’ founder Anand Kumar urged Indian-Canadian community to contribute specially in the field of education and skill development to improve the future of the young population of the country. The event was organized in Vancouver, on the 4th of September.

 

What is ‘Super 30,’ Who is Anand Kumar?

Anand Kumar started the tutoring venture in 2002 in Patna, the ‘Super 30’ program offers free mentoring and coaching for IIT-JEE. It has paved the academic path for talented students from underprivileged backgrounds. More than 400 students from the program, till date, have secured seats at the Indian Institutes of Technology.

Kumar further added: “Passion and commitment are necessary to bring the country forward, and that this distance should not be a hurdle in the digital era. “With such a large number of successful Indians in different fields here, India can bank on it and hope to use this vast expertise for its progress,” he added. Kumar pointed out that, “ India has an array of opportunities in the fields of education, healthcare and skill development. I am confident that with the kind of passion you people have shown, the pull of your motherland will make you contribute significantly in the days to come. These sectors employ a young workforce and those below the age of 35 comprise of more than half of India’s total population.”

Now, research not a boundation for promotion Says Prakash Javadekar

College professors will no more be under boundation of research to move a step ahead or to be specific, get a promotion. This good news was disclosed by Union Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday. But university teachers would have to prove their worth through research to earn a promotion.

This decision of the government has proved to be a succor to the long-standing grievance of teachers who have felt that the academic performance index (API) carrying the research condition was totally unfair to them.

The Union HRD Minister who was speaking at the inauguration of a two-day conference attended by teachers from over 80 universities, and organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM) and Delhi University’s Deen Dayal Upadhyay College, also expressed the same views. He said that opposing of API in which research was a compulsion for promotion of college professors, really disturbed and could not do justice.

 

However, the professors won’t be given a reprieve from the mandatory student and a community activity for promotion,” he said. But those who still wish to go by the research work are free to carry it. The choice is theirs, he said.

He laid emphasis for the creation of smart campuses in which energy conservation and cleanliness are given the top most priority. And to promote this drive a smart campus competition will be held which will be centred around “saving of electricity, harvesting water and energy generation by hoisting solar panels on college roofs”.

“It will be a necessity for all institutes to be a part of this drive and we will rank them on the cleanliness platform,” he added.

 

Pertaining to the issue of norms laid for ad hoc employees in DU, where there are over 9,000 ad hoc teachers, which is on a higher side as compared to other universities, the minister said the present system would undergo a change” after which the appointment of these teachers would be regularised in a year’s time”. He gave another good news-the minister said that the seventh pay commission would soon be brought into action to benefit the concerned.

A teacher who is introspective, comprehensive, prolific user of technology and in tandem with the changing scenario in the field of global education, scores more than any conventional one.

Teaching and learning is a lifelong process that the educators and learners tread together. Today’s teaching fraternity has to portray a ‘posse’ of roles – a facilitator, a counsellor, a friend, a parent and many more. When a teacher says that she has gained vast experience in the line of teaching, it is by virtue of her students. No teacher can undermine the influence of her students in the progress of her career graph.

Teachers need to be ‘Techno Savvy’

At a stage when information is available at the click of a button, younger generation are forever on ‘Techno Savvy Mode’. Therefore, constant reinforcement, exposure to the latest technological know-how, creative and innovative teaching tools, etc., should be any teacher’s ‘best friends’. In modern times teacher cannot ever depend on the age-old method of teaching-learning. Along with innovative teaching methods, futuristic curricular objectives should also be framed. Needless to say, technology should form an integral part of the curriculum.

Regular refreshers courses, in-house training, attending workshops and most importantly reading, should be a part of every teacher’s ‘Planner’. A lot of expectation rides on the teachers’ shoulders.
